UniMate - Behind the Code

In good UniMate fashion and to start off the new year, we thought it was finally time we revealed the wiz kid behind the code: Becca. Around mid September Charlotte and I (Irina) finally let go of our hope of coding the app by ourselves and welcomed Becca on board who saved us a lot of tears and sweat. It would have never been possible without her. Keep reading to get to know the third and final member of the all female team and how she works part-time on UniMate while holding down a job!

So Becca, tell us a little bit about yourself!

I’m Becca, 22 and born and bred here in sunny England. I recently graduated with an MEng (integrated masters) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Imperial College London, but I’m currently training / working full time to be a patent attorney, and working on UniMate in my free time. However, when I’m not working on the app, I’m a keen cheerleader, lacrosse player and love lifting weights in the gym too.

How did you join UniMate?

So I originally met Charlotte through my boyfriend, Loic, who she went to school with. We hit it off pretty quickly and became friends. For my final year project at uni, I had developed an iOS app which she had helped me test, so when she came up with the idea for UniMate but hadn’t quite managed to finish developing it, she dropped me a message asking if i knew anyone who could help. I loved the idea and immediately told her that I myself was interested! And the rest is history...

What’s your role in the UniMate family?

I’m the developer, so the one who has been spending her time coding the app and bringing Charlotte’s and Irina’s ideas to life!

What are your dreams and hopes for UniMate?

I really hope that UniMate helps students’ experiences at university just that much smoother! I remember spending hours when I was a student building a spreadsheet to calculate what I was currently averaging, and what I needed to achieve to get my desired degree classification! So hopefully we will be able to help others skip this (rather complicated and frustrating) step.

What was your favourite part of being a student?

Becca submitting her final year dissertation!

I loved how social it was, and how you definitely make friends for life (no matter how cliché that sounds!). But student discounts were (and still are...) definitely a perk! I also honestly loved my subject and the cool opportunities that my degree provided me.

Are you a dog or cat person?

Honestly, I’m probably a both person? I’m one of those annoying people who can’t choose a favourite because it depends what mood I’m in… E.g. I love how chill and sassy cats are but also do love a good energetic walk or run, like a dog!

What was your favourite student night out?

I’m a big fan of union nights were you can chat and hang out with friends, before dancing the night away on the dance floor!

What’s something you did over lockdown?

Alongside completing my degree, I spent a lot of time making new and upcycling old clothes using a sewing machine that I got for my birthday. I also spent a lot of time with my family, and even started running over summer (something which I previously said I would never do… “why run when you can walk?”)!

So there we have it: Becca, the sewing cheerleader who codes after work and our CTO. We cannot thank her enough for the amount of work and effort she has put into creating this app with us. Hop on over to our Instagram to find her participating in our IGTV video series where we cover research-based topics such as how to manage your time and how sleep affects your memory. We'll continue posting more behind the scenes UniMate content but in the mean time check out our previous post where we covered what to do on your study breaks to remain energised and make sure to keep in touch with us on our Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to find out more student life tips and other fun content! Until next time,

- Irina
